poem
For its 8th exhibition, Octagon presents a project focused on the nature of evil.
One of the very few oil painting ever produced by Gustav Doré, the 1863 canvas titled L’enfer (Inferno) depicts an epic vision of hell. At the center sits the devil in full power, enthroned amidst vapors, wielding a sword in one hand while violently waving the other in the air. Damned souls stir and fall around him, fading in and out of red vapors. The only glimmer of hope is a faint bright light shining through a distant and deep cave.
In contrast to the biblical and epic nature of Doré’s work, Grimaldi’s poem 'Divide' provides a tender vision of wretchedness and sweetness from a deeply poetic, human, and compassionate perspective.
